Leading Metaphor

My leadership metaphor is related to golf!!! Surprise Surprise, I can relate to this because golf has many different parts that are all very unique.  Golfing involves many parts like driving, approach and short game.  First is driving which can be related to taking risk!!  Every time I come to the tee I have to decide whether I should play it safe or take a big risk that could pay off big.  Next is the approach, which is the shot too the green!!  I can relate this to leadership because it is about making the right decision and being confident in what decision you make because if not you wont be committed and follow through with the shot!!  The final part is the short game which requires touch and the feel that leaders need to connect with the right people and know how to get the people you want involved!! Golf is a relatable key into golf and can be expanded upon!!

The person that is the most influential to me is someone that has revolutionized the game that I love! Phil Mickelson has been one the most influential professional golfers for many reasons.  He has revolutionized the game of Golf for people that swing left-handed, like me.  Before he turned pro in 1992 there were very little left handed golfers, it was also very hard to acquire left handed clubs.  Since he success there has been many new left handed golfers like myself.  It also has become a lot easier to find top of the line left handed golf clubs.  It still is not even close to the same availability as right handed clubs, but there are many new left handed youth golfers emerging.

Phil Mickelson also is a very influential role model to me.  He has been known for being a family man and always prioritizing his family first.  He has gone through a lot of struggles in the past couple years but he golf game has not suffered at all.  A couple of years ago his mother and his wife had breast cancer at the same time.  It was very hard for him and his escape was on the golf course.  He had one of his best years on tour that year and both his mom and wife beat cancer.  He is also very into his kids life for being so busy.  This past year in the US Open which is one the biggest tournaments every year. He decided to fly back to San Diego where he is from to see his daughters middle school graduation.  That night he flew back to Philadelphia and arrived at 3am, and had an 8am tee time.  He caught a lot of negative press for this, saying he will not be able to play well and he wasn't smart to do that.  He ended up finishing 2nd and nearly won the tournament.

Phil Mickelson is a leader not only on the golf course but off the course as well.  He shows how he can get young golfers into the game and make it more popular.  He also shows how important it is to put family first and not let what other people say discourage you and put you down.

What makes me come alive!!!

What makes me come alive is my passion for Golf.  I started playing golf when I was four years old.  Throughout my life I have won over fifteen golf tournaments, played against some of the best golfers in the state, played on my high school golf team for five years, and was the Captain for the team and MVP.  Golf is my passion and makes me come alive.  My whole personality changes when I step onto the course and get into my element.  I also get away from all my problems when I get on the course.  I always enjoy the peace and quite I get while I am on the course.  Golf has been probably the biggest part of my young life and I am so happy I got into golf.

"I have a dream"

The speech Martin Luther King Jr. gave was probably the most influential speeches in the history of the United States.  This country has benefited greatly from his courage to stand up in front of the nation and fight for what was right.  For us in the Emerging Leaders program we need to have this skill to stand up for what we believe in and for what we know is right.  His leadership shows how just one person can bring together a whole nation and rally not just African Americans but everyone at the time.  The possibilities of the speech were endless because it could have gone in any direction.  This why MLK is such a great leader, for going into the unknown and still standing strong.  This speech was so effective because there were so many people thinking what MLK was thinking, but no one had the courage to get up and say it like he did in such a non violent way.
